About Grandmothers

Grandmothers Against Gun Violence (GAGV) is an active, effective, and growing grassroots organization. Founded in Seattle in 2013 in the wake of the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, GAGV is on a mission to eliminate gun violence in our urban and rural communities. GAGV provides public education on ways we can work together to reduce the proliferation of guns in America and advocates for commonsense government legislation on gun safety and responsibility.

We are citizen activists united in our goal to create a safer world for our grandchildren and for theirs. We are teachers, doctors and nurses, attorneys, business leaders, media personalities, community volunteers, artists, academics, homemakers and public policy experts. We have been catalysts in making Washington State a national leader in gun violence prevention, and share our resources and experience with like-minded groups and grassroots organizations across the country.

We are inclusive in our approach and welcome members of all ages, ethnicity, gender, geography, and life experience.

October 2017

“It has often, maybe even always, been women who lead the way on social change. Now we are grandmothers and still have a zest for activism. The energy and commitment of our members and supporters never runs down. We show up, stand up, speak up. It is an honor to belong to this community of women.”
